Wenger 'hurt' by humiliating defeat

Arsene Wenger said he was humiliated by the crushing 8-2 defeat at Premier League rivals Manchester United.

Wayne Rooney scored the sixth hat-trick of his Old Trafford career as United went back to the top of the table and left Wenger facing a growing crisis.

"Of course you feel humiliated when you concede eight goals," said the Arsenal boss. "It was a terrible day."

Sir Alex Ferguson said: "He has been a big adversary and will continue to be when he gets his big players back."

Wenger insists it is too early to judge whether his summer transfer policy has been flawed following the departures of Cesc Fabregas and Samir Nasri and the lack of midfield replacements.

But he is now battling to sign reinforcements before the transfer window closes at 2300 BST on Wednesday.

Wenger, who insists he will not quit, expects to complete the signing of Monaco's South Korean striker Park Chu-Young before then.

He also wants to sign a central defender and a midfielder, and Arsenal are likely to renew their interest in Bolton centre-half Gary Cahill, having already had one bid turned down.

Wenger, who became Arsenal manager in October 1996, added: "We have to find the right players and if we do we will sign them. We have the money and if we find players to strengthen the team we will do it. If we don't do it, it is because we haven't found them.

"I try to make the right decisions and the two players we sold [Fabregas and Nasri], I brought them to the club. In 15 years I have brought some good players.

"You know me, so you should give me some more time to see if I have got it completely wrong."

After Arsenal's worst defeat since 1896, when they lost 8-0 away at Loughborough Town in Division 2, Wenger added: "I do feel it was under special circumstances.

Arsenal captain Robin van Persie, who had a penalty saved when the Gunners were 1-0 down, concedes his team must improve before their next league game at home to Swansea on 10 September.

"We need to come back," said the striker. "We have Swansea in two weeks, which is a good opponent and I look forward to that.

"This was the strongest team we had today. We gave our maximum but it was clearly not good enough.

"I don't think we can hide behind injuries or suspensions. It is no excuse. They had injuries too, this is football."

Former Arsenal defender Lee Dixon said the Gunners were already out of contention for the title but insisted Wenger was still the man for the job.

"You can rule Arsenal out of the championship based on this performance and size of this squad," said Dixon.

"But he's the right man for the job. I still think he has a lot to offer Arsenal and it will be a matter of time before he does strengthen the squad."

Dixon blamed the defeat on a lack of strength and depth and the absence of a clear game plan.

"Arsenal had an inexperienced team and bench and that showed from the start not just in the way they played but in the manner in which they got beat," said the former right-back.

"They were going forward when they shouldn't have been going forward, dropping off when they shouldn't have been dropping off and leaving a huge amount of space behind.

"When you go to Old Trafford you need a game plan, whether you put your first team out or you have got a young team. On Sunday, they had no plan whatsoever."

Rooney meledak pada minit ke-40 dan 62, kedua-duanya menerusi sepakan percuma di luar kotak penalti sebelum melengkapkan hatrik pada minit ke-81.

Arsène Wenger was left facing a deepening crisis at Arsenal after hat-trick hero Wayne Rooney inspired Manchester United to an incredible 8-2 victory at Old Trafford.

Just hours after neighbours Manchester City had inflicted a 5-1 hammering on Tottenham at White Hart Lane, United ensured a double dose of Mancunian misery for north London’s embattled rivals by maintaining their 100 per cent start to the season.

But for David de Gea’s first-half penalty save from Robin van Persie with the scoreline at 1-0 to United, the outcome could have been so different for Wenger’s young team.

Yet United, fielding the same youthful team which defeated Tottenham 3-0 last Monday, showed that inexperience combined with old heads can bear fruit.

The only downside for United was the first-half injury to Danny Welbeck, whose hamstring strain looks certain to force him out of England’s forthcoming Euro 2012 qualifiers against Bulgaria and Wales.

Welbeck had set United on their way to victory, however, by netting his second goal in a week to open the scoring,

The 20-year-old, capped by England against Ghana last season, held off the less than muscular challenges of Johan Djourou and Laurent Koscielny to head Anderson’s lobbed pass beyond the statuesque Wojciech Szczesny on 22 minutes.

Arsenal responded well, though, and referee Howard Webb correctly awarded a penalty to the visitors on 27 minutes when Jonny Evans’s tug on Theo Walcott sent the winger tumbling to the ground.

Van Persie was foiled by De Gea, however, with the Spanish goalkeeper diving low to his right to keep out the Arsenal captain’s spot-kick.

Having endured a tough start to life in English football, the reaction of De Gea’s team-mates, who raced to congratulate the 20-year-old, suggested a turning point for the youngster.

It was certainly a turning point for United. Having faced an early equaliser, they punished Arsenal for the penalty miss by making it 2-0 through Ashley Young just one minute later.

And it was a stunning goal from the former Aston Villa winger, a 20 yard curler which left Szczesny with no chance.

The Pole should have done better with Rooney’s first, however, when the United forward beat him with a free kick on 41 minutes.

It was a well-executed free kick, but the ball was within the keeper’s reach and he should have pushed the shot to safety.

Arsenal started brightly in the second-half, however, and it required a fine save from De Gea to keep out Van Persie’s near post volley on 53 minutes.

Once again, though, United responded to Arsenal missing a chance and they made it 4-1 eleven minute later when Rooney netted another free kick after being fouled by Djourou.

Rooney’s second signalled a goal-rush. Nani made it five three minutes later after latching onto Rooney’s pass before Park Ji-sung claimed a sixth on 70 minutes.

Van Persie scored a consolation goal to make it 6-2 on 74 minutes, but defender Carl Jenkinson was sent off for a second yellow card two minutes later, leaving Arsenal vulnerable to further United goals.

And the seventh came on 81 minutes when Rooney scored from the penalty spot after Walcott had fouled Patrice Evra.

To make matters worse for Arsenal, Young scored United’s eighth in stoppage time to claim top spot in the Premier League.

Safiq Rahim ke Cardiff City Liga Divisyen dua England

KAPTEN skuad bola sepak kebangsaan, Safiq Rahim bakal mencipta nama di bumi Eropah. Dia akan mencipta sejarah muncul pemain Malaysia pertama beraksi di saingan Liga Divisyen Dua England, Liga Kejuaraan.

Semalam, pemain tengah Selangor berusia 24 tahun itu telah menerima surat tawaran rasmi daripada Cardiff City untuk menjalani ujian percubaan (trial) selama tiga minggu pada penghujung Oktober depan.

“Saya sangat gembira apabila mendapat peluang keemasan seperti ini. Saya akan cuba melakukan yang terbaik sepanjang ujian percubaan itu nanti.

“Saya telah menerima surat tawaran dan dokumen berkaitan hari ini (semalam). Pada 5 September depan, saya akan mengadakan pertemuan rasmi dengan Datuk Chan Tien Ghee (Pengerusi Cardiff City).

“Insya-Allah kalau ada rezeki dan terpilih, dapatlah saya menyarung jersi Cardiff City pada musim perpindahan Januari nanti,” kata Safiq ketika dihubungi Kosmo! semalam.

Pemain kelahiran Seremban, Negeri Sembilan yang membesar di Kuala Selangor itu turut lega apabila pihak Cardiff City memberi ruang untuknya memberi tumpuan kepada aksi Piala Malaysia terlebih dahulu.

Liverpool FC rakan program Akademi KLFA

KUALA LUMPUR: Persatuan Bola Sepak Kuala Lumpur (KLFA) kini dalam fasa terakhir untuk memeterai perjanjian dengan kelab bola sepak Liga Perdana Inggeris, Liverpool FC, sebagai rakan program akademi bola sepaknya. Presiden KLFA, Datuk Astaman Abdul Aziz, berkata perjanjian yang dijangka akan ditandatangani awal November itu hanya akan berjaya jika KLFA berjaya mendapat penaja untuk keseluruhan program itu.

"KLFA kini dalam rundingan terakhir dengan beberapa penaja untuk menyusun satu pelan kewangan jangka panjang untuk membantu perjalanan akademi dan perbelanjaan saingan liga Super," katanya pada majlis penyerahan geran tahunan Dewan Bandaraya Kuala Lumpur (DBKL) kepada KLFA disini hari ini.

Beliau berkata, jika kerjasama rakan program akademi bola sepak antara Liverpool dan KLFA berjaya, ia adalah julung kali Liverpool mempunyai akademi latihan di luar England. Astaman berkata, akademi yang terletak di Taman Melati, dekat sini, sudah siap sepenuhnya dan dijangka mula beroperasi pada Januari 2012. "Sebagai satu akademi yang baru ditubuhkan, kita akan bermula secara kecil sesuai dengan kemampuan infrastruktur yang ada," katanya. Sementara itu, Astaman berterima kasih dengan sumbangan geran tahunan daripada DBKL berjumlah RM350,000 untuk membantu menyelesaikan sol bayaran gaji pemain dan pegawai KLFA yang tertunggak selama tiga bulan. LONDON - Samir Nasri dikecam oleh pemain baru Gunners selepas bintang Perancis itu meninggalkan Arsenal untuk Manchester City kerana mengejar tawaran yang lumayan.

Emmanuel Frimpong, 19, membidas Nasri yang bakal menerima gaji 175,000 pound (RM859,769) seminggu.

Pemain tengah, Frimpong menerusi laman sosial Twitter berkata: "Wang merupakan akar umbi kepada semua kejahatan."

Kenyataannya itu dibuat selepas Arsenal mengumumkan perpindahan pemain itu menerusi laman web rasmi kelab tersebut, kelmarin.

Bintang baru Gunners itu dibuang padang sewaktu menentang Liverpool, Sabtu lalu masih marah terhadap keputusan Nasri, sehari selepas rakan sepasukan, Jack Wilshere mengucapkan selamat maju jaya kepada pemain itu.

KLUANG – Tiga kanak-kanak meninggal dunia dipercayai akibat lemas selepas ditolak ke dalam sebuah kolam takungan air oleh bapa mereka dalam kejadian di Ladang Lambak/Elaeis, Jalan Mengkibol, di sini, malam semalam.

Ketua Polis Daerah Kluang ACP Mohd Fawzi Arshad berkata dua kanak-kanak perempuan berumur tiga dan lima tahun serta adik lelaki mereka, berusia dua tahun, dipercayai ditolak ke dalam kolam kira-kira 500 meter dari rumah mereka pada 7.30 malam.

“Ketiga-tiga beradik itu dipercayai dibawa ke kolam berkenaan oleh bapa mereka yang berumur 29 tahun dengan alasan untuk memancing ikan sebelum ditolak dan mati lemas,” katanya kepada pemberita di Ibu Pejabat Polis Daerah (IPD) Kluang, di sini, Isnin, memetik Bernama.

Mohd Fawzi berkata pusat kawalan IPD Kluang menerima maklumat kejadian itu daripada orang awam pada 10.20 malam sebelum meminta bantuan pasukan Bomba dan Penyelamat Kluang bagi melakukan gerakan mencari dan menyelamat mangsa.

Beliau berkata mayat kesemua kanak-kanak yang lengkap berpakaian itu ditemui kira-kira satu setengah jam kemudian.

Lelaki itu katanya turut berada di bawah pengaruh alkohol dan kini ditempatkan di Hospital Kluang untuk rawatan.

“Polis sedang menyiasat motif kejadian mengapa lelaki itu sanggup menolak anaknya ke dalam kolam yang menjurus kematian. Bedah siasat terhadap tiga kanak-kanak terbabit akan dilakukan hari ini untuk mengetahui punca kematian sebenar,” katanya.

Menurut Mohd Fawzi polis sudah merekodkan keterangan ibu kanak-kanak itu yang berumur 23 tahun bagi membantu siasatan dan polis sedang mendapatkan perintah mahkamah untuk menahan reman suaminya.

Kes itu disiasat mengikut Seksyen 302 Kanun Keseksaan kerana membunuh.

Pasar ramadhan seri iskandar dilanggar todak...eh dilanda ribut

PARIT: Sebanyak 12 khemah yang menempatkan peniaga Pasar Ramadan berhampiran Pejabat Daerah Perak Tengah, Seri Iskandar dekat sini musnah dalam kejadian ribut, petang semalam.

Kejadian berlaku kira-kira jam 4.30 petang ketika bazar terbabit sesak dengan orang ramai yang sedang membeli juadah berbuka puasa di situ.

Peorang peniaga, A. Halim Ngah Ismail, 36, berkata, ketika kejadian, dia bersama beberapa pekerja sedang melayan pelanggan yang datang ke gerai untuk membeli minuman.

Katanya, angin kencang melanda mengakibatkan khemah peniaga diterbangkan hampir 10 meter dan keadaan ketika itu sangat cemas menyebabkan peniaga dan pengunjung bertempiaran menyelamatkan diri.

"Bagaimanapun, syukur kepada Allah kerana kejadian berkenaan tidak menyebabkan sebarang kecederaan serius atau kehilangan nyawa di kalangan peniaga atau pelanggan," katanya.

Sementara itu, Anggota Parlimen Parit, Mohd Nizar Zakaria berkata, pihak Majlis Daerah Perak Tengah (MDPT) akan mengambil tindakan segera membantu peniaga yang terbabit dalam kejadian berkenaan.

"Jika semuanya berjalan lancar, semua peniaga akan dapat berniaga seperti biasa di situ esok bagi membolehkan mereka mencari rezeki ketika membuat persiapan menyambut kedatangan Hari Raya minggu depan," katanya. - BERNAMA
